The Landscape

The province of Lamas, located in the San Martin region in northern Peru, stands out for its cultural and natural wealth. The Lamas landscape is made up of the 11 Districts that make up the province, which are: Alonso de Alvarado, Barranquita, Caynarachi, Cuñumbuqui, Lamas, Pinto Recodo, Rumisapa, San Roque de Cumbaza, Shanao, Tabalosos, Zapatero, due to the fact that the geopolitical division is taken as a frame of reference, which allows establishing an analogous area of intervention of many of the institutions and organizations established in the territory and reinforces the integral perspective that we wish to apply to its situation. This landscape encompasses an area of 478,855 hectares, of which 28.52% is used for agriculture and 22.35% corresponds to the Cordillera Escalera Regional Conservation Area. The main economic activities include farming, animal husbandry and tourism. Farming is the primary subsistence activity of established families in the province, as well as its main source of economic income since it is carried out in 100% of populated centers. The main crops in the province are coffee and cocoa, followed by corn, bananas, cassava, rice, oil palm, beans, sugar cane, cotton, and sacha inchi. Regarding of animal husbandry, cattle, pigs and sheep are the most frequently reared. As for tourism, this sector experiences a fluctuating flow of visitors. The province reached its peak in 2018 with 32,714 visitors but saw a decline to 12,884 by 2020 due to the impacts of the pandemic. See More
